London Galleries Make Cuts

Published: February 6, 2009

LONDON—London galleries are not immune to the effects of the economic downturn, the Art Newspaper reports, and are making cuts in an attempt to weather the storm.Lisson Gallery, whose artists include Anish Kapoor and Richard Wentworth, has cut five of its 30 staff members, while over at White Cube, which represents the likes of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, higher numbers of staff have been laid off. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that as many as 30 people have been dismissed.Sadie Coles, who operates three London spaces, has decided to close her Heddon Street gallery at the end of the month and has dismissed one of her staff members. And finally, Waddington Galleries will not participate in next month's TEFAF Maastricht fair; the gallery declined to comment on why.
